Qualification summary

This Level 6 Diploma in Advanced Project Controls Practice and Techniques (RQF) supports learners in developing their own professional competence, applying data centric execution and analytics, applying change control processes and more.

Completion of this vocational qualification is an endorsement of the learner’s competence and ability to be effective in or progress into a lead or management role within their chosen project controls-related discipline (pathway).

This vocational qualification contains four pathways. The learner is required to select only one pathway when registering on the qualification, and successful completion of the qualification pathway will lead to the learner being awarded one of the following:

What are the entry requirements?

In order to achieve this qualification, a learner must be working in a role within their selected qualification pathway and be able to generate the work-based evidence at the required level.

Due to the level and complexity of the subject, it is recommended that a learner holds a minimum of GCSE grade C/5 in English language and mathematics, or Functional Skills Level 2 or above in English (language) and mathematics, or equivalent, and meets one or more of the following criteria:

is educated to A-Level/Level 3 standard, or equivalent
holds an ECITB Level 3 Diploma in Project Control techniques and practice (RQF), or equivalent qualification
possesses relevant professional experience.

Approved Centres will discuss the qualification with learners to determine how suitable it is for them, given their past experiences and qualifications, and their ability and motivation to learn.

What is the qualification structure?

To achieve this qualification learners must complete 10 mandatory units plus 1 pathway specific unit which relates to their selected qualification pathway as outlined in the table below.

It takes the average candidate 971 hours to complete this qualification. This includes 761 hours of time with a teacher, trainer or assessor, the remaining hours are unsupervised time for learning and producing evidence to be assessed.

The amount of time taken to achieve this qualification is typically 42 months.

Are there progression opportunities?

This qualification supports learners to progress into senior or lead project controls-related roles and management. These roles typically include project controls manager, lead estimator, lead planner and lead cost engineer. It can also support aspirations of moving into the more senior role in their career path of head of project controls (or equivalent senior-level project controls-related role).

Evidence of attainment in the Level 6 Diploma in Advanced Project Controls practice and techniques may also support a learner’s registration for professional recognition with the ACostE in building a portfolio of evidence that may contribute towards registration for ICostE (incorporated) or potentially towards CPCostE (certified professional), and may provide evidence for some of the competence and commitment required for registration with the Engineering Council (subject to suitable engineering experience) as IEng (Incorporated Engineer) or potentially, CEng (Chartered Engineer).

The ECITB’s apprenticeship programme is its main vehicle for recruiting and training young people to meet the future skills requirements of the industry. Qualifications at Levels 5, 6 and 7 are often an integral part of this scheme.
