Stork, a major maintenance and asset integrity employer, has praised the ECITB’s e-learning platform for its positive impact on thousands of its UK workers.

Stork began using the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board’s Learning Experience Platform (LXP) for office-based employees in July 2023, before rolling it out for all offshore and site-based workers in March 2024.

As the largest customer using the LXP, Stork has around 2,000 employees using the online portal and amassed more than 4,000 course completions in its first year utilising the platform.

Learning and Development Consultant Daniel Stephen, who has been with the company for 11 years, was part of the original working group to roll out the LXP and ensured it was fit for purpose for all employees.

He commented: “We initially thought it would be beneficial to start using the LXP platform to consolidate multiple processes into one online platform for our learning content.

“The platform had enabled us to monitor and track our HSEQ compliance and learning gaps. It ensures there is a consistent learning platform for everyone across our UK business.”

Embedding the Learning Experience Platform

After a successful pilot programme, the e-learning platform was officially launched in January 2023 to provide more than 8,500 free online courses to in-scope ECITB employers within the industry.

In total, 10,089 courses were completed by 6,148 different users from 142 employers in its first year. The platform enjoyed continued growth at the start of 2024, achieving more than 15,000 course completions inside the first six months, delivering £500,000 in value-add to the industry.

Daniel added: “The set-up process with the ECITB team was simple and the platform is very user friendly and easy to navigate. The variety of content available is excellent and the new content search index makes it easy to identify content that you want to review or use.

“The design is sleek, simple and can be adjusted to your company’s brand, which makes it feel like it has been built uniquely for each organisation.

“Feedback from employees has been positive across the board. Individuals are now requesting access to additional content, which will help drive their own personal development.”

LXP delivering benefits

Since its launch, the LXP has helped to provide better access to training for all parts of the industry. Smaller companies, who have less capacity to manage their own online learning system, are able to join the ECITB Learn Academy and access content.

For employers who already have their own established learning management system, e-learning files are transferred, while companies with administrative resources can create their own online learning environment with a branded academy, of which 45 were built in the first year, including Stork’s.

The LXP, which is accessible from any device, provides access to a wide range of resources, such as e-learning packages, video courses, webinars, podcasts and e-books. It allows people to learn at their own pace.

Other benefits of the platform include being able to create a personalised experience for each user, providing analytics that enable learners to track their progress and employers to measure the impact of the training being undertaken by its employees.

Of the thousands of courses completed at Stork, the most popular so far have been the iHasco HSE Compliance modules in manual handling, risk assessments and COSHH awareness.

Daniel continued: “Being able to standardise HSE compliance training across the company for all employees has been one of the benefits for us.

“Having access to a wide variety of content in different formats, varying lengths and providers has delivered engaging content for our employees that covers a variety of learning styles.”
