Short courses from the ECITB are proving a hit with employers as they deliver punchy, bite-sized remote learning in a range of important areas.

Delivered remotely, the courses – taught by ECITB-approved training provider, Go Forth – cover topics including risk management, introduction to project control, estimating and project document management. The sessions balance theory and exercises and employ role play so candidates get the chance to experience the different team roles and tasks involved.

Earlier in the year, Middlesbrough-based Industrial Technology Systems Ltd (ITS Ltd) put 19 employees through the Project risk assessment management course.

David Gibson, Senior Project Engineer with ITS Ltd, said: “The courses are delivered in a way that’s really engaging and encourages you to think differently. Because the groups are small and there are interactive elements, it is really focused and you leave with a new way of thinking about risk assessments.”

Kaitlyn Atkinson, Project Engineer with ITS Ltd, said: “The scenarios are really involving, and because they’re unseen before you start, you learn lots about all the different roles involved in the risk management process.

“Being a virtual course, I felt breaking the sessions into two half days helped me take it all in better and stay focused throughout the duration of both sessions.”

Aaron Taylor, Graduate Engineer with ITS Ltd, said: “The use of role play in the course encourages you to think outside the box and place yourself in other people’s shoes.

“As a more junior member of the team, I found this a really good introduction to risk management and gave me the opportunity to experience the project manager’s role.”

Paul Ripley, Finance Manager with ITS Ltd, said: “The feedback we have had from staff has been excellent. Everyone enjoyed themselves and learned a great deal. We are really impressed by the content of the training and the high standard of delivery with Shane of Go Forth an energetic, involving and thorough tutor across all the course sessions.”

Shane Forth, Founder and Principal Consultant at Go Forth, said: “My goal since becoming an ECITB Approved Training Provider has been to  create a rich and interactive virtual learning environment through which I can work with delegates and help them collaborate together to improve their project controls knowledge and skills. I am delighted to see this being realised, as demonstrated by the feedback from ITS.”

Chris Claydon, ECITB Chief Executive, said: “Short courses delivered remotely really came to the fore during the pandemic and are a key part of the ECITB’s plans to expand the volume of training we support. The feedback here mirrors other responses we have had about this model of delivery; with employers and participant saying that it is more efficient, highly effective and drives the impetus for further training.

“With the ECITB firmly focused on workforce skills training to meet current and future demand, this approach will increasingly become a valuable part of the training mix.”
