The ECITB Project Management Mentoring Programme (PMMP) is now open for applications from prospective mentors and mentees.

Over an eight-month period, senior industry mentors are paired with developing project professionals to share knowledge and experience.

Established in 2014 for project managers within the oil and gas sector, the scheme has since broadened its scope to cover all sectors of the engineering construction industry (ECI) including nuclear, power generation, renewables, food and drink, water treatment, chemical and pharmaceutical.

Coordinated by the Project Management Steering Group* (PMSG) and the ECITB, the programme is an excellent example of how industry cooperation works for the benefit of the sector as a whole.

“Project management is broadly the same whichever sector you are in. Spanning all sectors of the ECI allows the cross-fertilisation of ideas as well as opportunities to develop cross-sector relationships.

“The eight-month programme sees qualified and experienced project practitioners imparting wisdom and providing guidance to less experienced project professionals with the aim of accelerating their performance and careers.

“It is rewarding for mentors and mentees, and both sides learn a great deal – not just about the work they do – but also about themselves and their own ambitions.”

“My mentor has offered valuable advice, boosted my confidence, enhanced my skills, while also helping to expand my network.

“Having a mentor creates a sense of accountability and motivation to follow through on goals. Overall, having a mentor has helped to supplement my personal and professional development, and equipped me with tools, connections, and insights to achieve my goals more effectively.”

“This was a highly valuable experience that has helped me reflect on my experiences and apply learnings to grow as a professional.

“Having a network of internal and external people I can trust to discuss my career with is something I find incredibly valuable. In return I am committed to mentoring others and find this to be equally fulfilling.”

“It allowed me to connect with and learn from, an accomplished project manager from another company within the industry. The programme was insightful, and it offered time and space to ask questions and acquire a fresh perspective.”

“The scheme is fantastic and so special. It is run on a voluntary basis to share knowledge and experience with a new generation of project managers.

“But I also get so much from it. Like most mentors, I’ve kept in touch with my mentees and maintained professional ongoing relationships with them.”
