“One of the most exciting aspects of engineering is its ability to evolve and adapt to the needs of the modern world. The energy transition is a perfect example—companies, including the one I work for, are diversifying from traditional oil and gas projects to focus on sustainability and renewable energy initiatives. This shift is opening up entirely new areas of opportunity and innovation.”

Kyle Marshall

Instrumentation & Control Engineer, Worley

How did you get into engineering?

I’ve always had an interest in science and maths, and as I began researching potential career paths, I discovered engineering. To learn more I attended several career events with my parents where engineering companies showcased their different schemes, such as apprenticeships and graduate programs. From there I applied for an apprenticeship with a company I liked and I’ve been in that same team for 10 years now.

What subjects did you take at 14, 16 and older to help you get into your career? Were there any subjects that were especially useful?

I focused on science, maths, IT, and English throughout my education. Among these, science and maths were particularly helpful in building the foundational skills needed for my engineering career.

If I wanted to be an engineer, what’s one thing I could do now to start preparing?

Start by exploring the various fields within engineering. It’s a massively diverse profession with many disciplines, such as instrumentation, mechanical, civil/structural, and process engineering. Understanding the different engineering opportunities will help you identify which area aligns with your interests and strengths.

What’s one thing people might not know about your job?

The opportunities to travel can be incredible, depending on the company and the type of projects you’re involved in. In some cases, the possibilities feel almost limitless, offering experiences in different locations and cultures around the world.

Do you have a work life balance? And get flexible working?

Work-life balance and flexible working arrangements often depend on the company and the specific project. Personally, I’ve been fortunate to work on projects that offer benefits like nine-day fortnights and other flexible arrangements, which have provided me with a fantastic work-life balance.

What’s something about you that we might not know?

I’ve been passionate about sports, especially football, for as long as I can remember. That enthusiasm hasn’t faded at all—I’m still as obsessed now at 27 as I was when I was a kid.

What do you think the future of engineering looks like? Will there be new types of jobs?

Absolutely. One of the most exciting aspects of engineering is its ability to evolve and adapt to the needs of the modern world. The energy transition is a perfect example—companies, including the one I work for, are diversifying from traditional oil and gas projects to focus on sustainability and renewable energy initiatives. This shift is opening up entirely new areas of opportunity and innovation.

What do you enjoy to do outside of work?

As I mentioned before, I’m a huge football fan and enjoy anything related to the sport. I’ve also signed up for the London Marathon, so I spend a lot of my free time exercising.
